Do you have a gold star on your Florida driver license? If so, that means you are REAL ID compliant! REAL ID is a nationwide effort to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards, which in turn will help fight terrorism and reduce identity fraud. Florida is a federal REAL ID compliant state, meaning that driver licenses and identification cards meet federal law security standards when confirming a person’s identity.

If you’ve come into our office to renew your driver license in the last several years, chances are you are already REAL ID compliant and have a gold star on your license. For those of you who do not have a gold star on your license, don’t worry – you, too, can become REAL ID compliant! The Lee County Tax Collector’s Office has worked to make this process as easy as possible. Simply visit one of our seven convenient office locations when it’s time to renew your license and bring the required documentation to prove your citizenship, immigration status and identity. These documents can include birth certificates, passports, marriage certificates, proof of residency, etc. For a full list of accepted documentation, visit our website.

Once you have the gold star on your driver license and are REAL ID compliant, you will never need to show the documents again unless you change your name or address. By becoming REAL ID compliant, you are now eligible to take advantage of our online payment service and easily renew your license online. How convenient is that?! Don’t believe us?
